where they make those critical decisions that govern their lives. You who garden certainly know that plants have a mind of their own. Given that humans, and the majority of animals, solve many of their stressful problems (say, hunger) with a change in behavior (foraging for food), where are these decisions made in plants? An intriguing, and visually pleasing, example of such decision-making can be seen in bonsai. These dwarfed trees, which have suffered severe pruning, bondage by wire, and permanent confinement in a small ceramic pot, respond by forming a canopy of miniature leaves that are essential to the aesthetic of this

Boosting bonsai trees for efficient features combination: application to speaker role identification

In this article, we tackle the problem of speaker role detection from broadcast news shows. In the literature, many proposed solutions are based on the combination of various features coming from acoustic, lexical and semantic information with a machine learning algorithm. Many previous studies mention the use of boosting over decision stumps to combine efficiently these features. In this work,...

BONSAI Garden: Parallel Knowledge Discovery System for Amino Acid Sequences

We have developed a machine discovery system BONSAI which receives positive and negative examples as inputs and produces as a hypothesis a pair of a decision tree over regular patterns and an alphabet indexing. This system has succeeded in discovering reasonable knowledge on transmembrane domain sequences and signal peptide sequences by computer experiments. However, when several kinds of seque...

Wound-Induced Endogenous Jasmonates Stunt Plant Growth by Inhibiting Mitosis

When plants are repeatedly injured their growth is stunted and the size of organs such as leaves is greatly reduced. The basis of this effect is not well-understood however, even though it reduces yield of crops injured by herbivory, and produces dramatic effects exemplified in ornamental bonsai plants. We have investigated the genetic and physiological basis of this "bonsai effect" by repeated...

Bonsai: Nature in Miniature

The 1914 Arnold Arboretum expedition to Japan led by Ernest H. Wilson produced, among other things, some excellent photographs which clearly show the natural inspiration for many of the forms of bonsai that most specialized kind of Japanese horticulture. Pictures such as these can help put the hobbyist in touch with the source of his art and can be of particular importance to bonsai enthusiasts...

FP-Bonsai: The Art of Growing and Pruning Small FP-Trees

In the context of mining frequent itemsets, numerous strategies have been proposed to push several types of constraints within the most well known algorithms. In this paper, we integrate the recently proposed ExAnte data reduction technique within the FP-growth algorithm. Together, they result in a very efficient frequent itemset mining algorithm that effectively exploits monotone constraints.
